Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

When it comes to teeth whitening, pregnant or nursing women should exercise caution and consult their health care provider and dentist before proceeding. While the safety of whitening products during pregnancy or nursing has not been extensively studied, it is best to err on the side of caution. It is important to weigh the risks and benefits of whitening procedures during pregnancy or nursing, as it is not known if the chemicals used in whitening products can be safely absorbed by the body.

By consulting with a trusted healthcare professional or dentist, pregnant or nursing women can make an informed decision about whether whitening is right for them. In some cases, it may be best to delay whitening procedures until after the pregnancy or nursing period.

In order to maintain a brighter, whiter smile, it is important to make certain lifestyle changes. Dental health should be taken seriously, and professional teeth whitening treatments should be used in combination with lifestyle changes to keep teeth looking their best.

White teeth can be achieved and maintained by reducing consumption of staining foods and beverages, quitting smoking or using tobacco products, maintaining good oral hygiene, and regularly visiting a dentist for check-ups and cleanings. Additionally, using a straw for drinks that may stain teeth and drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help wash away food particles and bacteria.

To explore treatment options, be sure to contact your cosmetic dentist to discuss the best tooth whitening and enamel protection options for your oral health.

Continuing with the topic of teeth whitening, it is important to consider the potential side effects of the procedure. Common side effects include tooth sensitivity and mild gum irritation. These symptoms may be a result of the type of treatment or the special light used in the dental procedure. Fortunately, these effects are usually temporary and subside shortly after the treatment.

Quality dental care is essential to ensure the safety of the procedure and minimise any risks. With the proper care and precautions, teeth whitening can help to create beautiful smiles with brighter, whiter teeth.

Cosmetic dentistry has become increasingly popular in recent years as people desire a more attractive smile. To avoid any potential tooth infection or discomfort, it is best to consult your dentist before any dental procedure.

Although bleaching and whitening are often used interchangeably, there is an important distinction between the two when it comes to teeth whitening.

Whitening is the process of restoring the surface of the teeth back to its natural colour by removing dirt and debris, while bleaching is the process of whitening teeth beyond their natural colour using products that contain bleach (usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide).

Emergency dentist treatments, laser tooth whitening, tooth extractions and other treatments may be needed to address discoloured teeth, depending on the severity.

For those looking for a more permanent solution, whitening and bleaching are great options. Natural teeth can be whitened and bleached, as well as crowns, porcelain veneers, and other dental work.

With the right product and procedure, you can have a bright and beautiful smile.

Although there is an age requirement for professional teeth whitening services, those over 18 can safely whiten their teeth with the help of a qualified dentist.

At Dental Clinic Parkdale, we provide personalised treatments tailored to your individual needs. Our experienced and highly qualified team offer both preventative and cosmetic dentistry procedures, as well as emergency appointments if necessary.

Our team of professionals are dedicated to providing you with the best possible care and customised treatments to suit your individual needs. We strive to provide the highest quality of dental care to ensure the best possible results from the cosmetic dentistry procedures we offer.

To maintain the results of your teeth whitening, it is important to take the necessary steps to ensure they remain as white and healthy as possible. Avoiding foods and drinks that can stain teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-coloured fruits, can help prevent them from yellowing. Using a whitening toothpaste to remove surface stains and prevent yellowing is also recommended. Additionally, brushing and flossing regularly, as well as avoiding smoking and tobacco use, can help maintain the whitening results. Finally, it is advised to get regular dental cleanings and check-ups to remove plaque and surface stains.

At Parkdale Family Dental, we are committed to helping you achieve a brighter smile safely and effectively. Follow our detailed whitening instructions to ensure the best results and minimize any discomfort. Proper preparation, careful application, and attentive aftercare are crucial for a successful whitening experience.

  1. Prepare Your Teeth: Floss and brush your teeth thoroughly before starting the whitening process.
  2. Attach Nozzle: Remove the lid from the syringe and attach the nozzle.
  3. Apply Gel: Place a small amount of gel (about the size of a matchstick head) in the tray, targeting the front surface of each tooth compartment.
  4. Insert Tray: Carefully insert the tray with the gel into your mouth. Avoid pushing the gel out of place. Bubbling may occur; this is a normal part of the whitening process.
  5. Wear Trays: Keep the trays in place for 30 minutes.
  6. Avoid Gum Contact: Be careful not to get gel on your gums. Remove any excess gel with a cotton swab or a dry toothbrush.
  7. Rinse Trays: After whitening, rinse the trays with cold water.
  8. Rinse Teeth: Rinse your teeth to remove any remaining gel.

Sensitivity and Irritation

  • Some patients may experience increased tooth sensitivity to cold or non-specific sensitivity in the teeth, gums, tongue, lips, or throat. If this occurs, stop treatment. Symptoms should subside within 1-3 days, after which you may continue whitening. If symptoms persist or are severe, discontinue use and contact us.
  • If you experience gum irritation, reduce the amount of gel used. Ensure trays do not extend over your gums to avoid placing the gel in those areas.
  • For tooth sensitivity, try whitening every second or third night. If sensitivity continues, use toothpaste for sensitive teeth alongside the whitening gel.
  • The area of the tooth near the gums may take longer to lighten than the biting edge and will remain the darkest part of the tooth.

Post-Treatment Care

  • Some patients may not need to repeat the whitening process. If you notice new staining, a touch-up session of one to three nights every 4-6 months can help maintain results.

Do’s

  • Minimize consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco to prevent re-staining.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene throughout the treatment.
  • Store any remaining whitening gel in a cool, dry place (not the freezer) as it has a limited shelf life.

Dont’s

  • Do not use the treatment while pregnant or lactating.
  • Do not overload the trays with gel, as it may cause tooth or gum irritation.
  • Do not use any household or non-professional whitening products.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke while wearing the trays.

First Aid Instructions”

  • Avoid contact with eyes. If gel gets into your eyes, hold eyelids apart and flush with cold running water for at least 15 minutes or until advised by a Poisons Information Centre or a doctor.
  • Do not swallow. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting.
  • Remove contaminated clothing and flush skin and hair with running water.

For any concerns or advice, please contact your doctor or a Poisons Information Centre (Australia 131 126).
